This introductory course is designed for those looking to start their career in in the hairdressing industry. It will allow possible progression to our SVQ level 3 Hairdressing course. It will introduce you to a range of hairdressing techniques and skills needed for a career in the industry.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career in hairdressing. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You'll develop practical skills, and gain essential knowledge and valuable salon experience. The course covers cut hair using basic techniques, shampooing, conditioning and treating hair and scalp, dry, style and finish hair, set, style and dress hair, colour and lighten hair , cut and clipper hair. Work placement will also be a part of the course.

How will I be assessed?

Practical assessments under observation and a portfolio of evidence. Open and closed book Solar assessments.

Why should I choose this course?

This course will give you the skills and knowledge to start your career in hairdressing. You'll be taught in our purpose-built hairdressing salon by industry-experienced staff. You'll get the chance to work in our commercial training salon and to gain work experience with our partner hairdressers such as Ellisons Hair and Beauty, Wella and Capital Hair and Beauty. This will give you the best chance of progress into higher-level study.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to work as a junior stylist in a salon.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • minimum of two National awards or Standard Grades at general level or above or NPA Cosmetology 
  • SVQ Level 1 Hairdressing qualification
  • age 16 at the beginning of the programme 
  • excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with the general public 
  • highly motivated and have creative and artistic skills 
  • acceptance may depend on interview

Interview on campus with lecturing team.
