ESOL: NATIONAL 4 ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Intro to the course:

This is a Level 4 ESOL course that will suit anyone who wants to study at college or wants to improve general written and spoken English for the workplace. The course will focus on the following: 

  • writing for a college setting 
  • researching and preparing essays, referencing, PowerPoint presentations, making notes, linking words, structuring writing, research skills and writing reports.
  • reading – reading styles and strategies
  • how to read effectively for different situations
  • speaking - giving presentations and contributing in a workplace or classroom setting
  • pronunciation of complex vocabulary
  • listening – listening for gist, detail, & opinion
  • active listening in class and note taking styles and techniques. 
  • vocabulary – overall academic and professional vocabulary and modules relating to specific subjects as appropriate (e.g. business, childcare etc.)
  • grammar – Appropriate grammar points throughout the course.   

The course will follow an ESOL National 4 syllabus but will also include first language English modules in the following subject areas:  

  • information Technology (I.T. and computing)
  • customer care
  • communications. 

The National 4 is designed for those who have a reasonable level of English. The aim of the course is to provide students with a good understanding of the English language for speaking, listening and reading. It is to aid progression to a higher level ESOL course and/or employment.

Who is the course for?

The National 4 is designed for those who have a reasonable level of English who wish to continue to develop their language skills.

What will I study?

The purpose of this course is to develop the language skills needed for work and study-related contexts. 

In each class you will practise the four key English language skills: reading, writing listening and speaking using appropriate English language. 

In this course, the contexts of either work or study will be adapted to meet the needs of the class.

Next step course options

Access to further college courses will be greatly increased by completing this course as you will have spent time developing reading, writing, speaking listening and academic skills.

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing assessment of ability in speaking, listening and writing in English.

This course will provide you with a range of speaking, listening and writing skills required to work and study in the UK. It is designed as a course to aid progression to further study or employment, for those with some understanding and knowledge of the English language. 

Specifically, if you are planning to attend college or university, this will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to help meet the academic challenges you may face.

This course will prepare you for employment and further study. 

What are the entry requirements?

Entry to this course is subject to one or more of the following: 

  • National 3 ESOL qualification
  • a placement test to see which class is best for you 
  • course entry may be subject to interview

What are the interview arrangements?

Interview on campus with lecturing team, including completion of a level placement test if appropriate.

Fees for full time is £1008

This course is eligible for Bursary.
