Intro to the course:

Within the HND there are a variety of subjects that you will cover, giving you insight into a range of social science topics which include politics, criminology and psychology. You will consider Society and the complexity of factors that influence our society within Sociology. Through the study of criminal theories and case studies, you will develop underpinning knowledge that helps you gain awareness of the current schools of thought that are applied to criminal acts and processes. 

It follows on from topics you will have covered in your HNC Social Science program.

Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone who has passed the HNC Social Science and is keen to further enhance their academic progress and record by completion of the HND.

Lecturers who are subject specialists will guide you through the topics whilst using digital and practical technologies to support learning. 

Next step course options

After successful completion of this course, you could progress into University into various courses including psychology, criminology, social work, police and legal, politics, history and more. 

The HND helps develop transferable skills that can be utilised in the workplace such as critical analysis, problem solving and communication. 

After the HND, there is the potential to articulate into year 3 of some university courses. 

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through a variety of approaches including:

  • Posters
  • Closed book assessments
  • Reports
  • Essays

Your lecturer will provide guidance and support for assessments. If you require any learning support or adaptations for assessments, we have an onsite learning support hub who can discuss your needs with you.

What are the entry requirements?

The minimum entry requirements for the HND Social Science program are: 

  • Pass HNC Social Science
  • Interview / Group activity

If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place on this course, you may be offered a space on another course. 

What are the interview arrangements?

You will be asked to attend an interview with a course team member. This will also give you information on the course, whilst gaining insight into your suitability for the course.

Fees for full time is £1285

This course is eligible for SAAS.

Other information:

Previous students have progressed to degrees in social science, politics, criminology and psychology. Learners have also gained employment within the police service and social work.
