Simple eligibility

  • Apprentice must be 16 or over and in full time employment with you.
  • Employers are required to pay at least the National Minimum Wage.  
  • Duration typically 2-4 years, combining college-based learning and workplace training to develop a fully qualified trades person invested in your business.

Plumbing & Heating

We offer SVQ3 (SCQF Level 7) apprenticeships, training your apprentice in industry-ready facilities so they develop the skills your business needs from day one.

  • Four years total, three at college and one on site, delivering a fully qualified, time-served tradesperson invested in your business.

Hairdressing

If you are an employer who currently has a junior with the drive to learn more, we offer SVQ2 (SCQF Level 5) and SVQ3 (SCQF Level 6) apprenticeships in Hairdressing.

Simple eligibility

  • Apprentice must be 16 or over and in full time employment with you.

  • Attendance every Monday from 10am to 4pm.
  • Up to 2.5 years in total depending on the level of study.

Social Services & Healthcare

SVQ2, 3 and 4 (SCQF levels 6-10) apprenticeships include:

  • Healthcare Support Clinical Level 6 + Level 7
  • Healthcare Support Non-Clinical Level 6 + Level 7
  • Social Services & Healthcare Level 6 + Level 7 + Level 9
  • Social Services Children & Young People Level 7
  • Care Services Leadership & Management Level 10

What is a Modern Apprenticeship?

A Modern Apprenticeship combines paid employment with structured training, allowing apprentices to gain practical workplace skills while working towards an industry recognised qualification.

Who is involved in a Modern Apprenticeship?

The employer provides employment, workplace experience and support South Lanarkshire College is the training provider and delivers training, assessment and progress reviews. Skills Development Scotland (SDS) contributes towards training costs.

How long does an apprenticeship last?

Construction trade apprenticeships typically last between 2 and 4 years, depending on the apprenticeship programme, age and previous experience. 

Can the college support recruitment?

The college can support employers by identifying potential applicants and sharing opportunities with relevant learners where appropriate. Employers remain responsible for recruitment, interviews and final appointment decisions. 

Does the apprentice need qualifications before starting?

Entry requirements can vary depending on the trade and employer. Employers often value attitude, reliability and willingness to learn alongside qualifications.

Does the apprentice need to be employed?

Yes. Modern Apprentices must be employed and paid through PAYE arrangements.  

What are the employer’s responsibilities?

Employers are responsible for providing paid employment, meaningful workplace experience and appropriate supervision. Employers are also expected to support workplace learning, allow attendance at college and participate in regular progress reviews to help apprentices successfully complete their programme.

Will the apprentice be paid while attending college?

Yes. Time spent at college forms part of the apprentice’s contracted working week.  

What happens if releasing the apprentice for college becomes difficult?

Please contact the college as early as possible. We will work with employers to support business needs while ensuring apprentices remain on track with their qualification.  

How will I know how my apprentice is progressing?

Regular progress reviews are carried out throughout the apprenticeship with the apprentice, employer and college representative. Reviews may take place in the workplace, at college or online. Copies of reviews will be shared with employers. 

Who pays for the training?

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) contributes towards training costs, which are paid directly to the training provider.  

Can I still access the CITB Apprenticeship Grant?

Yes. Apprenticeship grant funding may be available to support eligible employers South Lanarkshire College is the training provider and can provide advice and support with the application process.   

How much do apprentices get paid?

Apprentice wages are determined by the employer. Employers must pay at least the National Minimum Wage. Employers may wish to refer to the Scottish Building Apprenticeship and Training Council (SBATC) recommended wage rates for construction apprentices.
