Funding for Training

At South Lanarkshire College, we can help individuals, employees and employers explore funding opportunities to support the cost of courses, training and skills development.

There are now three significant new funding opportunities available through Scotland’s colleges, offering support for parents and carers, employees and employers. These opportunities can help make education and training more accessible, whether you’re looking to gain a qualification, develop new skills, progress your career or support the development of your workforce.

We can also provide advice and guidance on Levy Grant Funding available to registered CITB companies taking on a Modern Apprentice.

Our team can support you throughout the funding process and help you understand which opportunities you may be eligible for. Funding accessed through these schemes would be used towards eligible training delivered by South Lanarkshire College.

RISE Fund

The Raising Income through Skills and Education (RISE) Fund is designed to help parents and carers gain the skills and qualifications they need to enter employment, return to work or progress further. It can also help overcome barriers such as childcare and travel costs.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the RISE Fund you must:

  • Be living in Scotland full time (including those with refugee status or asylum seekers)
  • Be a parent or carer
  • Have a child at home who is under 18 years old
  • Earn an individual income of below £33,000.

The Training Access Fund 

The Training Access Fund (TAF) helps in-work parents and carers access free skills courses to help them progress in their careers.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the TAF fund you must:

  • Be living in Scotland full time (including those with refugee status or asylum seekers)
  • Be a parent or carer
  • Have a child at home who is under 18 years old
  • Be employed
  • Earn an individual income of below £33,000.

New Flexible Workforce Development Fund (New FWDF)

The New Flexible Workforce Development Fund (New FWDF) is a new initiative designed to help employers invest in their employees who earn less that £33,000 per year through fully funded training delivered by Scotland's colleges.

It aims to encourage businesses to offer training opportunities that meet employer needs, while helping their team gain new skills and progress in their careers.

Please note: This Fund is not the same as the FWDF initiative launched in 2017. 

What is the New FWDF?

The New Flexible Workforce Development Fund provides eligible employers with access to fully funded training to help upskill employees and support workforce development.

The fund:

  • Offers up to £15,000 of funded training per employer, per year.
  • Provides up to £5,000 of funding per eligible employee.
  • Supports flexible, work-friendly training delivered by Scotland's colleges.
  • Helps employees gain recognised qualifications and industry-relevant skills.

Eligibility

Funded training opportunities are only open to workers with an annual income below £33,000, who are either:

  • Parents or carers of a child aged under 18 living at home;
  • Aged under 24, or
  • Care-experienced or disabled and aged under 30.

The Fund is available to all employers operating in Scotland who implement (or are working towards implementing) Fair Work Practices.

How to Apply

Applications can be made by either an employer or an individual employee, provided the employer is aware of and supports the application.

Funding is limited and allocated regionally, so we recommend getting in touch as early as possible.
