Academic Appeals

We understand the importance of your results and if an issue occurs concerning your results, the College's academic appeals procedure can help put your case forward. Below you’ll find the answers to the questions that students often ask.

All students have the right to appeal against the outcome of an assessment without prejudice, and a student may continue to attend classes and to make use of college facilities whilst the appeal is being heard.

What is a complaint?

We regard a complaint as any expression of dissatisfaction about our action or lack of action, or about the standard of service provided by us or on our behalf.

What can you complain about?

You can complain about things like:

  • the admissions process
  • the disciplinary process
  • a request for a service or for information which has not been actioned or answered
  • wrong information about academic programmes or college services
  • the quality and availability of facilities and learning resources
accessibility of our buildings or services
  • failure or refusal to provide a service
  • inadequate quality or standard of service, or an unreasonable delay in providing a service
  • dissatisfaction with one of our policies / procedures or its impact on the individual
  • failure to properly apply law, procedure or guidance when delivering services
  • failure to follow the appropriate administrative process
  • conduct, treatment by or attitude of a member of staff or contractor (except where there are arrangements in place for the contractor to handle the complaint themselves); or
  • disagreement with a decision (except where there is a statutory procedure for challenging that decision, or an established appeals process followed throughout the sector).

Your complaint may involve more than one South Lanarkshire College service or be about someone working on our behalf.

How do I complain?

You can complain in person, by phone, in writing, by email or via our complaints form. It is easier for us to address complaints if you make them quickly and directly to the service concerned. So please talk to a member of our staff within the department you are complaining about. Then they can try to resolve the issue.

When complaining, please tell us:

  • your full name and contact details
  • as much as you can about the complaint
  • what has gone wrong; and
  • what outcome you are seeking

Student Funding

We know it is important for students, applicants and their carers to understand fees, funding available and other financial support prior to studying at the college. Below you will find information on fees and funding for courses at South Lanarkshire College.

When can I apply for funding?

You don’t need an unconditional offer to apply for Bursary/EMA/SAAS/Student Loan – a conditional offer of a college place is enough.

Forms and information are available online via the Student Portal and college website.

Guide to Tuition fee payment

If you are about to enrol in the college, please read this information carefully. Payments for courses are taken at the point of enrolment, therefore you should have your funding application or payment methods ready before you come to the college.

Failure to pay or fund your course will result an enrolment not being completed and therefore you will not get access to the college services for your course. For more information, please read the full tuition fees guide for enrolment via the document below. Scroll down the page for the different funding options and additional links.

Bursary Appeals

You can submit an appeal in the following circumstances:

  1. If your circumstances are exceptional and you’ve applied for and been refused a bursary by the College
  2. If you disagree with the assessment on your award notification
  3. If payments have been withheld and there are extenuating circumstances regarding procedures not having been followed.

If you wish to appeal against the amount awarded or a payment being withheld, you need to do so within 14 days of the notification/payment date.

Appeals can be made in writing to the Depute Head of Finance. Contact bursaries@slc.ac.uk for further information.

Support for Estranged Students

Students who are ‘estranged’ are people studying without the support and approval of a family network.  Students in this position often have no contact at all with their family and have removed themselves from a difficult or dysfunctional situation.

If this applies to you, we are keen to support you. We recognise that you might face particular barriers to learning if you don’t have the support of a family network.
