Intro to the course:

This industry‑recognised programme is designed for individuals who want to start a career as a Gas Engineer or build on existing mechanical or engineering experience.

Delivered at South Lanarkshire College, a fully accredited BPEC Assessment Centre, the BPEC Domestic Gas Foundation Managed Learning Programme (MLP) combines theory, practical training, and workplace experience to prepare learners for progression to ACS certification and Gas Safe registration.

Training takes place in the College’s purpose‑built facilities, with learning focused on current industry standards and employer expectations.

On successful completion of the programme, learners will gain a BPEC Gas Foundation Certificate, enabling progression to ACS assessments, Gas Safe registration, and future opportunities within renewables and low‑carbon technologies.

Who is the course for?

This Gas Foundation Managed Learning Programme (MLP) is best suited for adults (18+) who want to become gas engineers but don’t yet have gas qualifications.
It’s ideal for:

  • New entrants or career changers
  • Plumbers or heating engineers adding gas to their skills
  • Learners who can complete supervised on‑site experience with a Gas Safe engineer

It provides a structured route to ACS assessments and then Gas Safe registration, but does not certify competence on its own.

What will I study?

Learners complete tutor‑led classroom sessions, practical workshops, and assessed activities covering key aspects of domestic gas installation, safety, and servicing, including:

  • Gas safety legislation and emergency procedures
  • Combustion theory and appliance ventilation
  • Installation of pipework, meters, flues, and fittings
  • Commissioning of appliances including boilers and cookers
  • Electrical safety and fault‑finding
  • Central heating systems and controls

Learning is delivered through a combination of theory and hands‑on practical work to reflect real workplace conditions.

Next step course options

On successful completion of the MLP and ACS assessments, learners can apply for Gas Safe registration (not included in course fees). Progression into renewables and low‑carbon technologies

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of this award will be ongoing through a combination of practical work and knowledge assessments.

Why should I choose this course?

There are many opportunities in the Building Services Sector for those who are enthusiastic and appropriately trained. The ability to problem solve, work as a team and install, maintain and service gas and heating systems effectively will enhance your employment opportunities within the industry.

Where can this course lead?

  • Employment within the domestic gas industry
  • Installation, servicing, and repair of gas appliances
  • Working with letting agents and housing associations
  • Carrying out landlord gas safety checks
  • Progression into renewables and low‑carbon technologies

After 12 months on the Gas Safe Register, engineers can expand their scope to include additional appliances, LPG, or non‑domestic gas.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants without gas industry experience must meet one of the following:

  • A recognised mechanical services or engineering qualification (e.g. SVQ Plumbing), or NVQ
  • All applications are subject to the applicant meeting the requirements of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.

What are the interview arrangements?

Interviews will be based on a successful application.
