Intro to the course:

This 2-year evening course is for learners who have previously studied HNC Childhood Practice and have Practitioner in the Day Care of Children status with SSSC. In year one of the course, you will complete the HND Childhood Practice award (Level 8). In year two you will undertake the Professional Development Award in Childhood Practice at Level 9. This award will allow you to register with SSSC as a Manager in the Day Care of Children. 

This course is delivered through evening sessions two evenings per week. There will me a blend of on-campus and online sessions throughout the year. There is a requirement for you to be working in practice prior to undertaking this course. There may be an option for South Lanarkshire College to arrange a work placement for you if you are not currently employed in the sector. 

Progression to PDA Childhood Practice in year 2 will require employment within the early learning and childcare sector.

Who is the course for?

What will I study?

Year 1

The Higher National Diploma in Childhood Practice at SCQF Level 8 covers areas relevant to developing your professional practice. It builds on the skills of the Higher National Certificate.

Year 2 

The Level 9 PDA develops the skills and knowledge required to manage services for children and young people. It is aimed at those who wish to progress into management within the Childcare and Playwork sectors without having to complete a full-time university programme.

  • Children’s Rights: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Participatory Partnerships: Working with Families

Next step course options

On completion of this course, you could progress to university level study.

You will be assessed through a mixture of open and closed-book assessments and practical tasks.

Other information:

You may be eligible to apply for SAAS funding for this course. Any deficit in the course fees must be paid to the college by the student. The cost of the course will be available on the college portal and will be discussed at interview. Applicants applying with a relevant SVQ 3 will have a credit deficit which will need to be gained before the HND award can be achieved. Staff will discuss this at interview. Any credit deficit must be paid for by the applicant.
