Intro to the course:

Access to Nursing with ESOL is delivered in partnership with the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP). It is designed for adults returning to education whose first language is not English, and provides the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to progress to degree‑level programmes in nursing or other health‑related fields—such as paramedic science—or to further study on related HNC courses.

The programme is recognised by partner universities as an alternative to traditional entry qualifications. It also offers intensive guidance and support to build confidence, strengthen core skills, and maximise the likelihood of successful progression to higher education.

Please note that this course is not available on a part‑time basis.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career as a nurse. It will suit adult returners or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You'll be introduced to various healthcare subjects to enable you to progress to a university degree or a health-related field at HNC level. The course also develops confidence, core skills to maximise chances of successful progression to higher education. You'll learn through groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

Progression routes depend on successful performance at college and a satisfactory interview with the relevant university or college.

If successful, you can progress to a range of relevant HNC programmes at South Lanarkshire College, including:

  • HNC Healthcare Practice
  • HNC Social Services

You may also progress through the SWAP partnership routes to our partner universities.

Degree programme in nursing (adult, mental health, child and learning disability) 

In addition, this course can support individuals seeking employment within the care sector.

How will I be assessed?

Closed- and open-book assessments, practical assessment on placement, presentations, academic posters.

This course will teach you the practical skills and theory so you can progress to university study in nursing. Our registered and practising nurse and healthcare lecturers will share their experiences with you to help you start your career in the sector.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to work in the statutory, voluntary and independent care sectors. Career progression depends on a satisfactory Disclosure Scotland PVG check.

What are the entry requirements?

  • This course is suitable for those who have English as a second language, and who hold ESOL National 5 at A, or equivalent.
  • You should have been out of compulsory education for at least three years, although exceptional circumstances will be considered, and your highest qualification should be a non-related HNC.
  • When you complete the application form you should complete the  'Personal Statement' showing an interest and understanding of nursing and your reasons for applying for the course. You should also include the relevance of any work experience that you have, and demonstrate that you are highly motivated, conscientious and show academic potential. 
  • You should provide one suitable reference
  • If you do not meet the entry criteria for your chosen course, you may be offered an alternative course in a similar subject area.
