ACCESS TO CRIMINOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY

Intro to the course:

Curious about what makes people behave the way they do? Fascinated by crime, criminal behaviour and the justice system? Want to understand more about people and the society we live in?

Our Access to Criminology & Psychology course is an exciting introduction to the world of Social Science and is designed to help you build the knowledge, confidence and academic skills needed to progress to HNC Social Science.

Throughout the course, you will explore fascinating classic and contemporary topics in Criminology and Psychology, using engaging activities, real-life examples, case studies, research and discussion to bring the subjects to life.

Explore Psychology

Discover what makes us who we are. You will explore individual behaviour, thoughts and experiences, while also considering how the people and society around us can influence the way we think and behave.

Investigate Criminology

Delve into some of the big questions surrounding crime and justice. Why do people commit crime? What influences criminal behaviour? Does prison work? How should society respond to crime? And what might crime and criminal justice look like in the future?

You will examine theories and real-world issues while developing your own ideas and learning how to look at crime from different perspectives.

Build Skills for Your Future

This course is about more than studying Criminology and Psychology. You will also develop the academic and study skills that will help you take the next step in your education, including research, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and working with others.

By the end of the course, you will have developed a greater understanding of people, crime, behaviour and society, while building the confidence and skills needed to progress towards HNC Social Science and further study.

Who is the course for?

This course will suit a variety of learners. You may have recently left school, but do not hold the qualifications required for HN study, or be an adult looking to return to education.

What will I study?

You will study a combination of units which will largely focus on criminology and psychology. Sociology and history are also covered to ensure you have a well rounded knowledge of social science, supporting progression to the HND Social Science program. 

Within the course you will study core skills designed to ensure you have the skill set and insight into Higher Education study. Communication, numeracy and ICT skills are developed with a focus on confidence in your own ability and wellbeing.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment approaches vary between units depending on the requirements. 

Assessment approaches can include: 

• Closed book exams
• Open book exams
• Posters
• Presentation
• Practical skills

Your lecturer for each unit will advise on the assessment approach and timescales.

Where can this course lead?

Whilst this course does not provide specific vocational qualifications, it does support the development of highly transferable skills for employment. Through various approaches, your communication, problem solving and critical analysis skills will become enhanced, with the ability to apply them to a variety of situations. 

What are the entry requirements?

The minimum entry requirements for the course are: 

• Demonstrating understanding of course and its demands through a face to face interview on campus
• Personal statement detailing why you want to do this course and next steps 

If you are not successful in gaining a space on this course, we may offer you another course. 

What are the interview arrangements?

You will be invited to speak to attend an interview on campus. At the interview you will meet a member of the team, get further information on the course and be asked a few questions around the course.

This is a fast-paced and engaging course that will challenge you, build your confidence and help you become a more independent learner.
