Intro to the course:

The NC Childhood Practice is a innovative and dynamic course which sill help you start and progression your journey within the Early Education and Childcare Sector. 

Through practical sessions, placement attendance and taught theories, you will be able to develop the underpinning knowledge to become a Early Years Practitioner. 

The course team draw on their experience and insight into the sector to ensure that you are prepared for employment, but also progressing to Higher Education. This will include knowledge of child development, personal development, reflective practice and meta skills.

Who is the course for?

This course is for those who have completed their National 5's or demonstrated good life experience and are ready to gain a formal qualification within Early Years and Childcare. The sector is changing with research and studies identifying how best to support children,.

What will I study?

You will study a range of topics including: 

  • Child Development
  • Rights of the Child
  • Care of Children
  • Play work
  • Reflective Practice
  • Work placement

Within the work placement, you will be allocated a nursery or school.

Next step course options

The primary next step for the NC Childhood Practice is the HNC Childhood Practice (Next Gen). THis HNC Next Gen program is a forward thinking program that supports you both academically and vocationally. 

HNC Next Gen includes a placement element and is very focussed on developing your skills as a leading and reflective practitioner. 

How will I be assessed?

A variety of assessment techniques are used including: 

  • Closed book
  • Open Book
  • Posters
  • Presentations
  • Group Work

Your tutor will provide guidance as to the assessment process and dates. 

Why should I choose this course?

This course is supported with a lecturing team and support team who are driven to ensure you have a positive experience. We have rooms specifically designed for childcare use and access to a wealth of resources, as well as external speakers. Previously we have welcomed organisations such as the NHS and Care Inspectorate in to the classrooms, ensuring you are aware of up to date policies, processes and research in the sector. 

Where can this course lead?

You will gain registration with the SSSC (Scottish Social Services Council ) on successful achievement of the NC CHildhood Practice. THis allows you to gain employment as an Early Years Practitioner. 

It is also important to remember that the skills you develop, core and meta skills, will be transferable to multiple job opportunaties out with Early Years.

What are the entry requirements?

The minimum entry requirements are: 

  • 4 National 5 subjects at a C grade or above. 
  • Successful interview. 
  • Personal statement detailing your reasons for applying and why you are suitable. 
  • You will require a PVG for placement which the college will organise. 
  • Acceptable reference. 

If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place on this course, we may offer you another course. 

What are the interview arrangements?

You will attend a face to face interview with the team. Details will be provided on confirmation of the interview date.

Fees for full time is £1008

This course is eligible for Bursary.
