Intro to the course:

The PDA Level 6 Carpentry and Joinery programme has been developed to address skills demands within the construction sector by providing an accessible and industry-focused route into the trade. The programme offers learners the opportunity to gain practical experience, technical knowledge and employability skills within a controlled college environment, creating a strong foundation for progression to a Modern Apprenticeship, further study or employment.

Aligned with industry requirements, the course supports workforce development by preparing individuals with the core competencies expected of entry-level carpenters and joiners. Through a combination of practical training, theoretical learning and personal development, learners are equipped with the confidence, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in the construction industry and contribute to future sector growth.

What will I study?

You will gain both practical and theoretical knowledge, including:

Bench Joinery Skills

  • Marking out, cutting, shaping and assembling timber components; such as , stairs, doors and windows.
  • Use of hand tools and woodworking machinery

Site Carpentry Techniques

  • First and second fix carpentry
  • Installation of doors, windows, and interior fittings

Construction Knowledge

  • Understanding building methods and materials
  • Health and safety in construction environments

Technical Drawing and Planning

  • Interpreting drawings and specifications
  • Accurate measurement and setting out

Tool Maintenance and Safe Working Practices

  • Safe operation of tools and equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and efficient workspace

Throughout the course, you will also develop essential Core Skills, including:

  • Communication and working with others
  • Numeracy through measurement and calculations
  • Problem solving in practical tasks
  • Basic use of ICT for research and technical information

These skills support your ability to adapt to new technologies, work collaboratively and plan and complete tasks effectively.

Assessment is ongoing and carried out through:

  • Practical workshop projects

Important:
This course does not include the workplace-based SVQ portfolio, meaning all assessments are completed within the college environment.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants should have;

  • National 5 qualifications (or equivalent) preferred
  • Commitment to practical learning and teamwork

All applicants will be invited for an informal interview, including a Core Skills assessment, to ensure the course is appropriate for their level and to identify any additional support needs.

All applicants will be invited for an informal interview including core skills assessment. Applicants will also be required to provide a reference.
