NC SOCIAL SCIENCE, CRIMINOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY

Intro to the course:

This course will give you a strong foundation to start your future in the exciting world of  social science. By taking you on a journey through subjects such as psychology, criminology, sociology and history, you will learn how to critically evaluate the world around you. You will cover topics such as Human Society and the theories that help us understand the function of society.  Our criminology units help you to develop your awareness of what crime is, the reasons for its occurrence and the psychology behind it. 

It has been designed to support you to advance your knowledge in the subjects that helps us understand why our society functions the way it does, as well as developing key skills such as problem solving, critical analysis and working with others. 

The course also supports your underpinning skills in academic writing and communication as well as building your meta skills.

Who is the course for?

This course is a great starting point for individuals with a keen interest in social sciences and the world around us. It covers a vast array of topics that will help you go forward in education, social science and your career. 

The world is changing in so many ways, and this course can help you navigate those changes, gaining a better understanding of why things happen in our society. 

In particular you will focus on understanding crime, social issues such as poverty, impact of government policy and how the mind works through our psychology units.

This course will suit school leavers, mature students and those looking to return to education. 

What will I study?

You will study a variety of units, that include: 

• Psychology: Individual Behaviour.
• Sociology: Human Society.
• Modern Studies.
• Criminology
• History.
• Communication.

Each of the units is selected to provide you with a positive and progressive learning experience. 

You are also given a guidance slot which allows you to speak to your guidance tutor to discuss progress, future options and get some feedback.

Next step course options

For progression, most students will be looking towards the HNC Social Science.  The HN program builds on the NC units and the knowledge gained. It also introduces more complex ideas and topics which helps prepare you for university study. 

You will delve further into topics such as psychology, criminology and politics drawing on the expertise of the lecturing staff.  

You can also progress towards other HN programs within the college. Your guidance tutor and our student services team are on hand to help with these decisions. Additionally, through external speakers and engagement with various organisations, we will support you in gaining valuable information about the opportunities open to you. 

How will I be assessed?

A variety of assessment approaches are used including:

• Closed book
• Open Book
• Posters
• Presentations
• Essays 

Your lecturer will advise of assessment dates and arrangements at the start of the unit. 

Why should I choose this course?

This course allows you to expand your insight and knowledge on the past, current and future of society. Our course team will provide support and help you develop your skills and knowledge base. 

We use interactive and engaging teaching methods including external speakers and off campus visits to learn about local history. Gain insight into potential job opportunities by hearing from people doing the job. 

With the college offering the HND Social Science on campus, it also provides a smooth transition to the next level of course, should this be a potential option for yourself. 

Where can this course lead?

This course will help support your knowledge for relevant jobs and transferable skills. We support your problem solving ability as well as helping you develop the skills for applying the theoretical knowledge you gain. 

The NC Social Science course gives you the background in a multitude of subjects, allowing you to consider what area you would like to look towards studying or working. 

Previous students have, on completion of further study progressed to teaching, social work and civil service amongst other professions. 

External speakers attend, and off campus visits allow you to question and experience different work environments, giving you a taster of potential career routes. 

What are the entry requirements?

The minimum entry requirements are as follows: 

• Two National 5 subjects as a ‘C’ grade or above -  preferably one being English or a social science such as Sociology, Modern Studies, History, Politics or Psychology or relevant life experience.
• Personal statement giving detail as to your reasons for applying for the course and why you are suitable for the course.
• A successful interview. 

If you do not meet the entry criteria for your chosen course, you may be offered an alternative course.

What are the interview arrangements?

You will be invited for a face to face interview on the college campus with the course team. This will include information on the course and funding.

Fees for full time is £1008

This course is eligible for Bursary.

Other information:

The college has a learning hub on site, which can provide you with study support, writing and assessment skills.

Additionally, if you require extra assistance during exams and assessments, this can be assessed and arranged via the learning hub. 

With a library onsite, there is a wealth of resources for you to access to help with your studies. Textbooks can be found in physical form or electronic format. A computer suite is available for use. 

Funding and financial support is available on campus. There is free parking on site and it is only a short walk to the town centre. 

The NC Social Science Induction which occurs before the start of the course is also an opportunity to meet the course team and discuss ways in which we can support you through your journey with us.

Full time course: Full time - 2.5 days a week.
