South Lanarkshire College Become Independent Regional College Following Dissolution of Lanarkshire Region
South Lanarkshire College is pleased to confirm that, following ministerial approval, the Lanarkshire Region has been formally dissolved as of 31 July 2025. As a result, South Lanarkshire College has become a regional college in its own right, giving further flexibility to better serve learners, employers and communities across South Lanarkshire and beyond.
This important development will allow the College to respond more directly and effectively to local, regional and national priorities, including the urgent need to develop the future workforce in key sectors such as Business, Law and Financial Services, Health and Social Care, Construction and Low Carbon Industries as well as Travel, Tourism and the Hospitality Industries.
Becoming an independent regional college also strengthens South Lanarkshire College’s ability to deliver on its social mission: widening access to education and skills, tackling inequality, and contributing meaningfully to community wellbeing, economic inclusion and social justice.
Principal, Stella McManus, welcomed the announcement:
"This is a transformative moment for South Lanarkshire College. As a regional college, we will have the autonomy and accountability to deliver what our communities need most, opportunity, support, and routes to success in life and work.
All at South Lanarkshire College are deeply committed to our social purpose, ensuring that everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, has the chance to thrive. Whether it’s through training future care professionals, preparing learners for the green economy, or supporting those furthest from education and employment, this change gives us the platform to do more, reach further and have greater impact."
The College has a strong track record of educational excellence, inclusion and innovation. This transition will enable it to build on that foundation, ensuring that it can adapt quickly to emerging needs, foster stronger partnerships through collaboration, and make a lasting difference in the lives of learners and in the life of the region.
As part of this transition, South Lanarkshire College is also pleased to announce the re-appointment of Douglas Morrison as the new Chair of the South Lanarkshire College Board of Management. Douglas brings extensive experience the education sector and built environment, and he is currently the Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Built Environment - Smarter Transformation (BE-ST), Scotland's national innovation centre for construction and the built environment. Douglas has been a Board member since November 2021 and Chair of the Board of Management for the assigned College since January 2024.
His career has predominantly been in the tertiary education sector, where he has specialised in areas including, innovation, digital learning, environmental issues, and equity and inclusion, and he has a deep commitment to social equity and community-led development.
Commenting on their appointment and the transition to regional status, Chair Douglas Morrison said:
“I am honoured to take on the role of Chair at such an exciting time for South Lanarkshire College. Becoming a regional college is more than a structural change it is a powerful opportunity to deepen the College’s role as a driver of opportunity, fairness and innovation in our region.
The College is uniquely placed to support sustainable economic growth, deliver inclusive skills pathways, and help build a more just, resilient and prosperous future for South Lanarkshire. I look forward to working with the Board, the staff, students and our many partners as we realise that vision together.”
