This course will provide a basic introduction to aspects of Crime Scene Investigation and Forensic Medicine in Scotland. 

We will cover subjects such as:

  • Role of the Procurator Fiscal in investigation of suspicious deaths
  • Forensic Pathology
  • Crime Scene Examination and Considerations
  • Firearms, Firearms Injuries and Ballistics

Who is the course for?

This is course is optional for students currently studying towards HND Legal Services, HNC Legal Services or HNC Police Studies. The contents of this course are NOT covered in any of the courses currently on offer within the aforementioned HNC/HND frameworks and provide additional skills improving students chance of success in study and industry. This course is also suitable for anyone with an interest in Crime Scene Investigation and Forensic Medicine.

What will I study?

Subjects such as: Role of the Procurator Fiscal in investigation of suspicious deaths Forensic Pathology Crime Scene Examination and Considerations Firearms and Firearms Injuries Confessions.

Next step course options

This course will provide an insight into Crime Scene Analysis and Forensic Medicine from the perspective of the Police, Crown Office and also the Criminal Defence Solicitor. This course will involve practical elements which require role play using fictitious crime scenes. Students will be able to engage to consider the legal and medical implications of crime scenes, taking on the role of the Scenes of Crime Officer. The student will achieve team working skills unique to solving crime, report writing and problem-solving skills. For this reason this course equips students specifically to improve their practical and analytical skillset to study LLB to become and Solicitor or alternatively BA Law or BA Criminal Justice. Additionally, the student will gain an insight into alternative assessment methods used in assessing such courses at university (course not formally assessed: self-assessment, however, reflecting actual Forensic Medicine exams). In addition, for those students who complete the course but do not wish to attend university they will be provided invaluable practical skills involving analysing complex evidence, teamworking with a time sensitive high-pressured aim, problem solving and understanding the complexity of crime scenes generally. Upon completion, students will therefore achieve practical skills invaluable in the armed services or any of the UK wide police forces and various areas within the Scottish Criminal Justice System.

How will I be assessed?

There will be no formal assessment however there will be a self-assessment at the end of the course to bring insight into how the course may be assessed at University for those who wish to complete the self-assessment. Case studies will be used throughout the course.

Why should I choose this course?

This is an exciting course aimed at anyone who has an interest in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Medicine and Specialisms, such as firearms experts. This course does not provide a formal qualification in Forensic Medicine and Crime Scene Investigation.

Candidates looking to commence or having commenced HND Legal Services (or current HNC/HND Legal students nearing course completion): (for students moving onto LLB/BA Law/Criminal Justice/Criminology).

Candidates looking to commence or having commenced HNC Police studies (or current HNC Police students nearing course completion): for students seeking an insight into Crime Scene considerations and Forensic Medicine for entry to Police Scotland or the Criminal Justice System in Scotland.

NO interview requirement as this course is not formally assessed. All materials and equipment will be provided.

Other information:

This course equips current HNC/HND Legal and HNC Police students with unique skills. These include analysing complex evidence and investigatory skills which will prepare either for university with a view to entering the legal profession as a Solicitor ultimately or a career in any of the UK Police forces.
