This introductory course is a stepping stone towards a higher-level course in counselling or psychology. It is aimed at those wanting a career in this sector. The course introduces you to psychological theories and approaches, and basic counselling skills.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to develop their study of psychology or to progress to a career in counselling. It will suit:

  • school leavers, or those looking for a change in career
  • anyone looking to take your first steps into the counselling field

What will I study?

You'll learn the psychological theoretical concepts, skills and approaches to understanding people as well as develop a working knowledge of current counselling approaches. You'll learn through lectures, group work and guest speakers.

How will I be assessed?

Open-book assessment, essay/report, leading to a college certificate.

This is an area with good job prospects and earnings.  It introduces you to the skills and knowledge needed by the profession. Most students completing this course progress to an HNC Counselling at South Lanarkshire College.  You'll be taught by lecturers from the sector, and benefit from guest speakers from psychology and third sector counselling services.

What are the entry requirements?

No formal entry requirements. An interest in learning more about people and communication skills with experience in a related role, employment or voluntary, would be beneficial.
