Intro to the course:

Creative Futures is a level 6 course designed to be a launch pad and portfolio building course which will develop knowledge and skills you need for a career in the creative industries or onto an HNC or D program. 

This uniquely designed course allows you to choose an area of interest such a photography or graphic design and tailoring your projects towards that discipline. 

It is structured to teach you the basic skills  that are universal to the creative industries and then, through a series of projects with our industry partners and competitions briefs,  you will have the opportunity to experience live briefs to gain the knowledge to finally write and design your own personal project focused on your own area of interest. 

This is a dynamic course which draws on many disciplines, which will allow you to forge your own path and portfolio of work. 

This course is bursary funded.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to develop a career in creative industries. It will suit school leavers, adult returners, those looking to change or progress in their career or take their first steps into the industry.

What will I study?

The course structure is based around three modules:

  • understanding a creative brief
  • creative industries working with a creative brief 
  • creative industries presenting a creative project

It is within these modules that you will develop and explore your own area of interest.  

With additional subjects of photography, video and basic web design included, this will give you a broadened knowledge of essential skills to support your projects and provide essential skills for working in the creative industries.

Next Step Course Options

Learners who achieve this award will have opportunities to progress onto related Higher National programmes including art and design, creative industries, performing arts, photography, computing and digital media. 

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing assessment through a range of practical activities, candidate folios, self-evaluation, planning and review using secure SQA assessment support packs, e-portfolios and live projects.

Why should I choose this course?

This course is an excellent opportunity to learn the foundations of working within the creative industries. The course is designed to enable you to explore projects of interest to help build a portfolio of work, to help you to progress on to an HNC, HND or degree courses, or into employment. 

The balance of jobs in the creative economy is moving to a more highly skilled workforce.  The structure of the NC at SCQF level 6 recognises the changing nature of the creative industries workforce where the ability to secure work and progress requires a variety of specific and transferable skills as well as an ability to adapt to the diverse range of roles/tasks.

Where can this course lead?

The broad structure of this new National Certificate is designed to provide you with opportunities to develop creative and technical skills relevant for employment within the creative industries including in media, photography,  digital media,  visual communication and languages.   You may find routes into employment in a creative occupation, at a junior level or self-employment in a creative area, and then subsequently be able to undertake further Creative Industries qualifications, for example a Modern Apprenticeship.

What are the entry requirements?

School leavers:  Nat 5 English  and Nat 5 Art and Design or an alternative creative Nat 5 qualification for example media or computing

Adult Returners: portfolio of recent work showing creativity and creative development and relevant work experience

Where English is not your first language, it is recommended that you possess English for Speakers of Other languages at an appropriate level. If using a test such as IELTS or equivalent, an entry score of 5.5 or above would provide a sound linguistic basis for you to attempt the course.

What are the interview arrangements?

Interview session that may be followed by a one-to-one interview
