Intro to the course:

This Professional Development Award is for people who are already working, or would like to work, as classroom/ pupil support assistants or in an educational setting supporting young people with additional support needs. It could also suit learners returning to education who'd like to build on existing qualifications by gaining some experience working with children before going on to further study in HNC Childcare. The course is made up of eight National Units and a practical placement. Students must have a placement of one day per week in a primary or secondary school. Course units include: Child Development Supporting Behaviour Providing Learning Support for Children with Additional Needs Work experience in a Primary or Secondary School or in an Additional Support Needs (ASN) setting.

  • mature attitude and a willingness to learn
  • ability to work with others as part of a team 
  • interest in working with children and young people 
  • commitment to study at Higher Level is required 
  • as this course comprises a practical placement, Disclosure Scotland (PVG) vetting of all students will be required
  • entry to this course is based on successful performance at interview and experience working with children

What are the interview arrangements?

Applicants who meet the course criteria will be invited to attend an informal interview at South Lanarkshire College.
