Intro to the course:

This is a nationally recognised qualification for those who want to work in early learning and childcare settings, supporting children and young people with varying needs. The course involves two evenings working online and a two day work placement.  There will be occasional (once per block) on-campus days which you will be required to attend. If you complete the course successfully, you will be eligible to register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) at practitioner level.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career as a early years practitioner.

What will I study?

The course includes care in contemporary society, leadership starts with me, health wellbeing and safeguarding, lifespan development theoretical approaches, effective communication, health, safety and security in the work setting, reflective practice learning, graded unit 1, support for play learning and development and promoting language literacy and numeracy.

Thus course is assessed through open book assessments. Essays. reports, powerpoints etc. 

Why should I choose this course?

This course will teach essential skills and knowledge to enable you to progress to HND study or into employment. You'll be taught by lecturers with direct experience, and do a work placement with private and council childcare providers. This is a popular course, so we encourage you to apply early.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to work as an early years practitioner and employment in the voluntary, private or local authority sectors. Registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) is necessary.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • two Higher grades or 
  • Foundation Apprenticeship 
  • NC Early Education and Childcare, SWAP Access to Childhood Practice or equivalent SVQ level 2  
  • PDA Education Support Assistant 
  • some childcare experience 

 

  • acceptance may depend on interview performance

What are the interview arrangements?

Applicants who meet the course criteria will be invited to attend an informal interview at South Lanarkshire College.
