Intro to the course:

Business services, administrative and business support are predicted growth areas for employment in Lanarkshire over the next four years. This course will set you on the path to a career in business, HR, marketing, operations, accounting or economics. It will teach you the fundamentals of business areas such as managing people and organisations, IT, accounting, business law and marketing, including direct entry to third year of a relevant degree at university.

Who is the course for?

The HNC and HND Business are particularly suitable for learners who wish to develop a broad understanding of business, are interested in starting their own business, seeking employment, seeking progression in existing employment, planning to progress their studies without committing to a specialist area and who wish to articulate to a degree or professional qualification It will suit school leavers or adults returning to education. The HND has a managerial focus which enables learners to progress more quickly to supervisory/management roles.

What will I study?

This group award will provide a grounding for those intending to, or interested in, starting their own business by integrating a business fundamentals unit with other topics within the group awards and exploring the digital business models that are available, and emerging, to facilitate access to markets and means of production.

You will also complete an introductory accounting unit to equip you to manage cash flow, inventory and how to cost and price products and services. Towards the end of the HNC (or HND year 1) you will complete a graded unit examination based on the subjects:

economic issues - an introduction 

managing people and organisations, marketing -  an introduction, 

business fundamentals with emerging technologies and accounting for business - an introduction. 

You'll learn through a wide range and combination of teaching, learning and assessment methods. How will I be assessed?

Ongoing assessment through a range of practical activities, candidate folios, self-evaluation, planning and review using secure SQA assessment support packs. Towards the end of the HNC or HND year 1 you'll complete a graded unit examination.

What are the entry requirements?

Any of the following:

  • one relevant Higher
  • relevant NQ/NPA at SCQF Level 6
  • equivalent vocational qualifications from other awarding bodies
  • relevant work experience 
  • good level of digital literacy

If your first language is not English, it is recommended that you possess English for Speakers of Other languages (ESOL) at SCQF level 5 or an overall score of 5.5 in IELTS.

The Chartered Institute of Bankers for Scotland will accept holders of HND directly into their higher level qualifications (Chartered Banker) which leads to MCIBS (Member of Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland). Candidates completing the HND in Business are guaranteed Associate Grade of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
