Intro to the course:

This course focuses on developing knowledge and understanding in practical photography and will enable you to explore your interest in photography and will prepare you for progression to higher studies and/or employment.

You will be encouraged to develop both creative and technical skills required for a career in photography. Development of your critical thinking skills will be a focus, as will seeking peer/tutor feedback.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed from practical activities, written tasks and research reports. 

Why should I choose this course?

On successful completion, this course will give you access to a higher level of studying in Photography in College and/or at university to open opportunities for employment in photography across a range of sectors including construction, business, hospitality, estate agency, police and self-employment. 

Where can this course lead?

This course aims to provide good preparation to progress to higher studies in Photography.  Employment may be found in a junior role in a photography environment

What are the entry requirements?

ICT, Numeracy and Communication at National 4 plus a further relevant National 4 award or equivalent recognised qualification 

Evidence of interest in photography.  It will be beneficial if you could produce some examples of your work. 

Successful performance at interview


Where English is not your first language, it is recommended that you possess English for Speakers of Other languages at an appropriate level. If using a test such as IELTS or equivalent, an entry score of 5.5 or above would provide a sound linguistic basis for you to attempt the course.

What are the interview arrangements?

You will be invited for an informal group interview with the opportunity to discuss individual requirements. 

Other information:

On successful completion you will achieve an NPA in Photography at level 5  and an NPA in Digital Media, together with a range of SQA Photography units at levels 5 and 6 to enable you to progress to the HNC in Photography.
