PREPARATION TO STUDY LEGAL AND POLICE STUDIES

Intro to the course:

This is a preparatory course to enable progression to further study in legal, police and other uniformed services such as fire & rescue,  army,  navy, transport police, security and prison service. You will learn practical skills and theory transferable to various roles. It is ideal for those who want to progress to NC or HNC study, or to apply to the uniformed public services, or for an entry-level position in law and criminology.  The course also prepares students for progression onto a modern apprenticeship programme.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to develop their career in legal services or the Police Service and uniformed services. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

The course is aimed at students that have applied to study with us in August 2023.

What will I study?

You will study a range of foundation subjects in topics such as:

• Criminal law
• Family law
• Scots law
• Police studies
• Fitness testing
• Criminal justice

 You will undertake a range of educational visits and hear from a range of guest speakers.

The course also ensures a good foundation in core skills:

• working with others
• numeracy
• communication
• problem solving
• I.T.

Preparing to study modules will cover:

• study skills
• note  taking skills
• research skills
• report writing
• referencing skills

Observation, discussion, Q&A's and SQA secure assessments.

It will help you progress and specialise in your chosen area.  You will  be taught by staff experienced in these fields, and get the chance to visit local police offices, courts, the fire & rescue centre and more.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

• three National 4 awards  or
•  equivalent recognised qualification or
•  relevant work experience 

What are the interview arrangements?

You will be invited to attend an informal information and induction session.
