This course is for those wanting to start a career in childhood practice and early years. The course will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge needed to progress to a higher-level course.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career in childcare. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You'll learn how to work as a playworker with children aged four to 16, including leading practice and managing staff. You'll learn about professional practices, building relationships and personal development. You'll learn through groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

How will I be assessed?

Closed- and open-book assessments, practical play activities.

Why should I choose this course?

The Scottish Government commitment to provide at least 1,140 hours of early learning and childcare to every child from the age of three has led to opportunities in the sector. This course will teach skills and knowledge for progressing on to higher-level study or into entry-level employment. You'll be taught by lecturers with direct experience, and do a work placement to gain experience of nurseries, schools and other early years settings.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to work as a voluntary play worker or modern apprenticeship.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • 4 National 4 awards or 4 Standard Grades at general level including English 
  • Successful completion of National 4 in Care/Early Education and Childcare 
  • Experience of working with children an advantage 
  • Satisfactory references 
  • Ability to communicate effectively 
  • Criminal conviction form & Disclosure Scotland PVG check 
  • Successful performance at interview Acceptance may depend on interview.
