This introductory course will set you on the path to a successful career in fashion make-up or make-up artistry. It is for those looking to start their career and to achieve level 6. The course introduces you to different make-up and special effect areas such as creative make- up trends, special effects for media, character make-up, fantasy make-up, styling for a total look, wigs and postiche for media and commercial experience.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career in make-up. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You'll learn the basics for progressing in fashion make-up or make up artistry for TV and film. The course covers contemporary make-up techniques, character make-up, special effects, stying for a total look, body painting, wigs and postiche, product knowledge about face, eyes, cheeks and lips, wig and hair pieces for media, and commercial experience. You'll learn through demonstrations and workshops.

How will I be assessed?

Practical assessments under observation. Portfolio evidence. Open-/closed-book written assessments.

The make-up industry needs skilled staff. This introductory course will give you the skills and techniques needed for entry on to a higher-level course. You'll be taught by people with high-end experience. You will also get the chance to learn from employers such as Neill's Materials and Scottish Opera, and to gain work experience through a placement.

  • Make-up consultant 
  • Cosmetic company representative 
  • Session stylist.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • SCQF level 5 Hairdressing, SVQ2 Hairdressing or SVQ2 Beauty 
  • For direct entry, minimum of National 5 English/Art 
  • Relevant industry experience 
  • Skills test at interview Acceptance may depend on interview.

What are the interview arrangements?

Interview on campus with lecturing team. Skills test.
