Who is the course for?

Suitable for those working as a support worker in a field such as maternity support, children and young person support, health care, mental health or learning disability support. It is also relevant to those who have completed the HNC Care and Administrative Practice, HNC Social Care, HNC Working with Communities, HNC Additional Support Needs or HNC Early Education and Child Care and who want to pursue a career as a support worker.

What will I study?

Course includes:

  • Introduction to the communication skills, values and qualities required of the care worker
  • Inter-professional working and the importance of collaboration for effective person-centred care
  • Maternal health and wellbeing
  • Foetal health and wellbeing
  • Physical changes that occur during pregnancy and immediately following birth, including the development of the foetus and antenatal screening processes
  • Obstetric emergencies and assessment and treatment
  • Role of the maternity support worker in supporting the mother and baby

Hospital and community-based maternity care in supporting maternal and foetal health and wellbeing. You will develop the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to provide effective care under the guidance of the registered practitioner. .

How will I be assessed?

Open book, closed book, practical assessment on placement, presentations, academic posters.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following:

  • Credit Standard Grade Maths, Intermediate 2 or National 5 Maths (for midwifery entry at university)
  • NC level 6 in a health or care-related area
  • SWAP (Scottish Wider Access Programme) Access to Nursing
  • HNC Care and Administrative Practice/Healthcare Practice
  • Two Highers or equivalent, preferably including English

Detailed personal statement before interview You can apply without formal qualifications but you must have relevant work experience. You will sit an entrance exam. Course entry may be subject to interview. Even if you meet the minimum entry requirements, because of the demand for places and the specialist nature of this course, you may not be called for interview.
