Intro to the course:

With a continued demand for staff with advanced administration and IT skills, and an average annual salary in Scotland of over £28,000 for an office manager, and specialist administrators earning over £23,000 a year, there are good opportunities for those wanting to enter the profession. The second year will build on the knowledge and experience gained at HNC level, aiming to provide you with the skillset to be successful in business. With a demand for those with advanced Administration and IT skills, the HND course is perfect for those looking to enter the business world or progress to year 3 of a University Degree course.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to develop their career in administration or IT. It will suit school leavers, adult returners to education or those in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects.

What will I study?

You'll learn about word processing, spreadsheets and database to advanced level, office administration and management, marketing, human resource management, accounting, web design, social media, project management, ICT and digital technologies to provide business support. You'll learn through work placement, groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing assessment through a range of practical activities, candidate folios, self-evaluation, planning and review using secure SQA assessment support packs, plus two closed-book graded unit assessments, one at the end of year 1 and one at the end of year 2

Why should I choose this course?

This course will expand and refine your knowledge of Microsoft Office software and business support functions to advanced level preparing you for further study and a choice of different careers. You'll be taught by people with extensive experience of the industry, and get the chance to go on industry visits and hear from guest speakers.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to opportunities in a number of sectors including finance, health care, hospitality, HR, IT or marketing. Posts in these areas include Administrator, Executive Assistant, Finance Officer, Office Manager, Customer Service Administrator or Personal Assistant.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • 1 Higher plus 3 National 5 awards 
  • Relevant group of SQA National Qualifications at SCQF level 5/6 
  • Foundation apprenticeship in a relevant subject 
  • Equivalent recognised qualification 
  • Relevant current work experience 
  • If English is not your first language, ESOL at an appropriate level or IELTS or equivalent with an entry score of 5.5 or above
  • Entry to 2nd year requires an HNC in Administration and IT, with a minimum of 14 credits and an A/B in Graded Unit 1.

What are the interview arrangements?

Group information session followed by one-to-one interview.
