Intro to the course:

Top photographers in Scotland earn upwards of £600 a day. It's estimated that 7,800 jobs will need to be replaced or created between 2020 and 2023 in the creative industries and photography in Scotland, with the need for good quality images for advertising and content. This course will give you the skills to be a successful photographer. The course combines the traditional skills of image making with those needed to work in an ever-changing digital environment.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to develop their career as a photographer. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress in the industry.

What will I study?

You'll learn about photography styles and gain skills for working in the sector. You'll learn through work placement, groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing assessment through a range of practical activities, candidate folios, self-evaluation, planning and review using secure SQA assessment support packs. Open-book project-based graded unit assessment.

Skilled photographers are in high demand with photography needed for websites, social media, promotion and more. On this course, you'll gain the skills you need to become a top photographer. Many students completing this course go on to do the HND Photography to refine their skills or into work as freelance photographers within the creative industries. You'll be taught in the college photography studios by experienced staff, who also work in the industry, and may have the chance of work placements.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to opportunities such as working in a studio to scenic location photography. Many photographers set up their own businesses.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • 1 Higher plus 3 National 5 awards 
  • Relevant group of SQA National Qualifications at SCQF level 5 
  • Foundation apprenticeship in a relevant subject 
  • Equivalent recognised qualification 
  • Relevant current work experience 
  • If English is not your first language, ESOL at an appropriate level or IELTS or equivalent with an entry score of 5.5 or above You will be required to submit a portfolio of recent work and own or have the use of a DSLR camera for duration of course.

What are the interview arrangements?

Group information session followed by one-to-one interview.
