Skilled bakery and pastry chefs are in high demand, with an estimated 11,000 vacancies predicted across the UK in the next year. Helen Vass, winner of Bake Off: The Professionals is part of the teaching team. 

You'll learn in our purpose-built top-of-the-range kitchens, and gain industry experience and connections to ensure you have the best possible opportunities after completing your course. Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to progress their career in bakery. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or take their first steps into the industry.

What will I study?

You'll learn bakery skills and processes on this course which includes, cake decorating with chocolate and gateaux processes, sugar paste processes and patisserie. You'll learn through groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

This will give you the best possible chance to progress to a higher-level course or apply for entry-level jobs in bakery or professional cookery.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to employment within the bakery and food/hospitality industries as an apprentice baker, baker, in-store baker, pastry chef, confectioner or cake decorator.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • 3 suitable National 5, Intermediate 2 or General level Standard Grades including English and Maths or equivalent 
  • NPA in Bakery at SCQF level 4 
  • Equivalent recognised qualification 
  • Relevant work experience in the baking or food industry 
  • Acceptance may depend on interview.

What are the interview arrangements?

One-to-one or group interview with lecturing staff.
