T&E information for employers

Work Placements

The Training & Employment Team work with young people who are moving from school or college into the world of work or who are currently unemployed and looking for work or training.  An integral part of all our training courses is a work placement with local employers.

Are you interested and able to offer a work placement to a young person?  These are some of the benefits –
There is no cost
  • You have the opportunity to gain a free pair of hands when it suits you best e.g if you have an apprentice who attends college on block release
  • If you are planning to recruit it gives you an opportunity to try out someone before you commit and also saves potential recruitment costs
  • The young person is fully supported by the Training & Employment Team at South Lanarkshire  College who are at hand to deal with any issues
  • You are providing invaluable experience for a local young person and helping to make them more skilled and employable
  • The Team can also advise on training and funding.  In some programmes there may be wage subsidies or other financial benefits available ( see other page )
We require employers to have the following -

  • Employer’s Liability Insurance
  • Fire, Accident and First Aid procedures in place

Training and Funding Opportunities

There are a number of financial incentives and training programmes available to employers at present.  Please note that these often change depending on current economic conditions and all have their own eligibility criteria.  Further details can be found on the Skills Development Scotland website  www.sds.co.uk or speak to Diane Ashwood  01355 807635  or Ann McCracken  01355 807311  from the Training & Employment Team at South Lanarkshire College.

Get Ready for Work

A training programme aimed at school leavers to help them gain employability skills and practical work experience.  We work with local employers to source and provide quality work experience placements.  Financial incentives are available to employers who subsequently recruit a young person from this programme (see ERI below).

Modern Apprenticeships

We offer training to SVQ Levels 2 and 3 in hairdressing and SVQ 3 in construction and plumbing. These are aimed at young people already in employment and are designed to enhance the skills needed by businesses. Training is free to both employers and apprentices.

Employer Recruitment Incentive (ERI)

One off payments of £1,000 or £2,000 depending on the size of your company when you recruit a young person of 16 – 19 years who meet certain eligibility criteria

Adopt an Apprentice

This scheme allows Modern Apprentices who have been made redundant as a result of the current economic climate the opportunity to complete their training with an alternative employer or find alternative training.  It gives employers a helping hand of £2,000 to employ a redundant apprentice for at least 12 months

Safeguard an Apprentice

This provides a wage subsidy of £75 per week to employers in the construction, manufacturing and engineering sectors who are at risk of making their apprentices redundant.

Flexible Training Opportunities

Aimed at businesses of 150 employees or fewer this incentive provides a 50% contribution to the costs of training up to a maximum of £500 per employee (maximum of 10 employees per business).
