Rebuilding Opportunities

The Rebuilding Opportunities programme offers training opportunities and employability support to South Lanarkshire residents who are currently unemployed or have recently been made redundant with the view to help them up-skill in new construction specialism and progress into employment. You will find below details on the range of courses offered – from micro renewable energy systems installation and gas installation and maintenance, to general construction operations and assistance with job search.

All programmes are aimed at residents in South Lanarkshire who are unemployed and meet the entry criteria specified for each course. The focus of the courses is to progress participants into employment, so there will be considerable work on employability and jobsearch skills as well as a work placement on the majority of courses. Participants will also have access to a job club to help them progress into employment.

Training in Renewable Energy System Installation

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification in plumbing, gas or electrical disciplines to build on their current experience and knowledge to acquire new skills to become renewable energy systems installers. South Lanarkshire College offers a range of courses as described below.

Renewable Energy Awareness

Target market

The course is aimed at anyone who wishes to have a better understanding of renewable energy systems or for anyone who wishes to obtain an introductory level of knowledge regarding the principles of operation, what each system is capable of, potential costs and payback periods.

Training Course Objectives

The course material is designed to provide individuals with a base level of knowledge in the principles and capabilities of various renewable energy products and systems. This training material will serve both as a means of learning, as well as a tool of reference for future use.
Module 1 – Introduction to renewable energy
Module 2 – Solar thermal water heating
Module 3 – Biomass heating systems
Module 4 – Heat pumps
Module 5 – Wind power
Module 6 – Photo-voltaics
Module 7 – Micro-hydro power


Duration:
The course is designed to be run as a series of 7 x 2 hour modules which can be run as evening classes, weekend workshops or as a two day course. Course start dates: week commencing, 23 January, 20 February, and 19 March 2012.

Domestic Solar Hot Water Heating Systems

Target Market

The training/assessment course is aimed at candidates who have/hold the following:
  • A number of years' experience in plumbing or conventional heating engineering
  • A formal qualification at NVQ Level 3 in plumbing or heating engineering
  • A valid unvented hot water storage systems certificate

Training Course Objectives

The objectives of this training course are to enable delegates to:
  • Select the most appropriate solar system for the building based on consultation with the client about their needs and demands
  • Install common types of domestic solar hot water heating systems used in the UK
  • Maintain and service common types of domestic solar hot water heating systems used in the UK Target market
Duration: The training course runs over 2 days and consists of specialist training and assessments. The training is split between theoretical and practical.

Domestic Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems

Target market

Primarily aimed at plumbing and heating engineers recently made unemployed and who wish to upskill.

Training Course Objectives

To provide competent persons status thus enabling workforce to install unvented systems. The course provides: details in design, installation, service and maintenance, understanding of central heating and hot water storage systems design and installation issues as they relate to energy conservation.

Duration: 1 day training and assessment supplemented by self learning pack provided prior to course start date.

Energy Efficiency: Domestic Heating

Target Market

Suitable for operatives who have recently been made redundant and have experience in designing, specifying, installing or maintaining central heating systems.

Training Course Objectives

This course covers:
• energy consumption (SAP and SEDBUK ratings) within domestic buildings
• benefits of condensing boilers
• central heating methods, design types, components, associated controls

Duration:
1 day training and assessment supplemented by self-learning pack provided prior to course start date.

Ground/Air Source Heat Pump Installer

Target market

The training/assessment course is aimed at candidates who have recently been made redundant with the following background:
• Candidates who hold a formal qualification at NVQ Level 3 in plumbing or heating engineering
• Candidates who are currently undertaking a course in plumbing or heating engineering, which will lead to a formal qualification such as an NVQ Level 3 in plumbing or heating engineering
• A valid unvented hot water storage systems certificate.

Training Course Objectives

The objectives of this training course are to enable delegates to:
• Install common types of domestic heating-only ground/air source heat pumps in the UK which are connected to a horizontal closed-loop water/antifreeze based ground heat exchanger and a “wet” underfloor heating system
• To be competent to review and verify that the ground/air source heat pump systems would meet the design requirements.

Duration
The course consists of 2 days’ training and assessment.

Electricity for Plumbers

Target Market

Suitable for plumbers who are have recently been made redundant and have experience Course ideally suited for Plumbers and Heating engineers who would like to improve their knowledge of electrical fault finding on domestic heating systems Practical/Theory Training and Assessments ACS certificates (CCN1 and CEN1) are a mandatory pre-requisite to attend this course.

Training Course Objectives

This course has been designed with the plumbing and heating trade in mind, to enhance the skills and knowledge required to maintain and repair central heating systems. The material supplied has been developed to support the delivery of training in our well-resourced practical training area and the course contains a significant element of practical work.

Training in Gas Installation & Maintenance

Gas Installation and Maintenance

Target Market

Suitable for people with tools skills or an operatives/engineering background who are have recently been made redundant. Applicants will need to go through a PVG check (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) and should preferably hold a driving licence for progression into employment.

Training Course Objectives

The BPEC Gas Foundation comprises of a series of gas safety training courses. The courses have been designed to provide a route into the gas industry for individuals who do not currently hold the pre-requisite qualifications necessary to qualify to undertake assessments under the Accredited Certification Scheme for Individual Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS).
• Domestic gas and appliances
Candidates who successfully complete the BPEC Gas Foundation course will then be eligible to undertake the relevant ACS qualifications. The BPEC Gas Foundation courses fully meet the Gas Safe Register requirements for Category 2 and Category 3 candidates (see below). All candidates will undertake CSCS Construction Card Accreditation. The BPEC Gas Foundation is particularly suitable for candidates who have over a period of time accumulated a reasonable level of “life skills” and “dexterity skills” and is used to dealing with members of the public on a professional level.

Duration:
The course consists of 26 weeks on and off the job training and assessment

ACS Gas

Target Market

The course is designed for people who are unemployed or have recently been made redundant with previous experience as gas fitting operatives.

Training Course Objectives

Core specialist areas as required by UKAS. Trains plumbing and associated operatives to update and consolidate their skills in line with Health & Safety legislation and leading to Gas Safe certification. Courses are offered in the areas of: core domestic gas safety, cooking appliances; gas fires and wall heaters, gas central heating boilers; gas water heating appliances; domestic heaters; combustion products analysis.

Training in Building Insulation & Treatment

NPA Building Insulation & Treatment

Target Market

Applicants must currently be unemployed.  Applicants should have previous experience in construction.  

Training Course Objectives

The NPA Building Insulation and Treatments is focused on developing skills and knowledge in internal and external Insulation treatments that improve the energy efficiency of the building envelope. The programme provides work placement opportunities and has focus of progressing participants into employment. · Cavity wall insulation · Effective draft proofing · Installation of external insulation treatments. 

Duration: The programme is a full-time 17 week course that includes a blend of college and work placement opportunities in developing both skills knowledge and experience in a realistic work environment.

Training in Energy Assessment

Energy Assessors

Target Market

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. The course is for those with a keen interest in Domestic Energy at all levels and is aimed at those currently unemployed and who are seeking employment as a domestic energy assessor. Experienced Assessors can apply for prior learning through one of the protocol organisations. Less experienced assessors will need to gain the necessary qualification for a Energy Assessor - a nationally- recognised qualification. Candidates are usually employed or self employed when undertaking this course.

Training Course Objectives

The programme will provide candidates with the technical knowledge, and professional skills required to become an Energy Assessor. The candidate's competence will be assessed to ensure that they meet the relevant National Occupational Standard (NOS). We will provide each candidate with the following during their course: Training, combining classroom and "on-site" visits; comprehensive course material, which also acts as a technical reference; support from a professional Qualification Assessor for individuals throughout their assessment 

Duration:
Course 1 (Intensive Option): 5 day Course including Registration with City and Guild and on-line GOLA testing .   Start Date: 20 February 2012
Course 2: (Change of Career Option Course): 8 day course.  We provide each candidate with: Training, combining classroom and "on-site" visits over 8 days; comprehensive course material, which also acts as a technical reference; support from a professional Qualification Assessor for individuals throughout their training and assessment. Includes a full training portfolio, formative assessment and online testing.

Training in General Construction

NPA General Construction Operations

Target Market

Applicants must be aged 16-24, resident in South Lanarkshire and currently unemployed. 

Training Course Objectives

A short, 17 week course in general construction operations with a strong focus on progressing participants into employment.  This course covers: · employability skills · confidence building · short refresher skills intervention · skills test · Health and Safety test (CSCS).  Successful completion will lead to a National Progression Award in General Construction Operations which includes: · an introduction to safe working practices · monoblocking · slabbing · basic brickwork · drainage.  The focus of the course is to progress students into employment, so there will be considerable work on employability and jobsearch skills as well as a work placement.

Gateway to Construction

Target Market

Suitable for those who have previously worked in construction and who need assistance with refreshing their skills, job search and updating their CV. Assistance with work placements will also be provided.

Duration
: 3 weeks in college + work placement

Assistance with Progression to Employment

Employability support and Job Club For those looking for employment and who need support with identifying key skills and career goals. You will receive support with producing an updated CV, cover letters, personal statements, interview skills and job search activity.
